A Nebraska National Guard soldier died Saturday after a medical emergency during fitness training at an armory in Broken Bow.

Staff Sgt. Trevor J. Kurtzhals, a 29-year-old from Lexington, Neb., was a member of the 1075th Transportation Company, according to a Sunday statement from the guard. His 11 years of service in the guard included a 2010 deployment to Afghanistan.

The statement described the training exercise as routine, but did not provide any other details.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Sgt. Kurtzhals and our hearts and prayers go out to his wife, his children, his mother and family during this extremely difficult time,” said Maj. Gen. Daryl Bohac, Nebraska adjutant general, in the statement.

Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts also expressed his condolences via Facebook

“Sgt. Trevor Kurtzhals’ devoted service to our state and country will never be forgotten,” he said.
