nia: NIA, Armed Forces launch simultaneous operations in valley


A massive crackdown continued in the Kashmir Valley on Wednesday, with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the armed forces simultaneously launching operations in which the NIA arrested nine persons for their alleged involvement in militant conspiracies. A top Jaish-e-Muhammad commander Sham Sofi was killed in a separate encounter in Tral of southern Kashmir.

The ongoing security operation is being carried out ahead of the scheduled visit of Union home minister Amit Shah to Kashmir, around October 22-23.

Some senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the security establishment from Delhi flew to Kashmir in the past week to assess the ground situation.

NIA officials had raided around 20 locations in Srinagar, Shopian and Pulwama districts of Kashmir in the past two days, during which nine persons identified as Tariq Ahmad Dar, Bilal Ahmad Mir, Waseem Ahmad Sofi, Tariq Ahmad Bafanda, Haneef Chiralu, Hafeez, Owais Dar, Mateen Bhat and Arif Farooq were arrested.
